IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net:6667/#diyode)
Drop in for a chat with whoever is online at the IRC chatroom. It’s like instant messaging, but the format has been around a lot longer. You can choose to participate in hundreds of chats worldwide, including ours at DIYode.
There are many ways to connect with the DIYode IRC.
In a browser:
To log onto freenode, go to http://freenode.net/ , and click on “Using the Network” on the menu bar on the left. Once the new page appears, click on the “freenode webchat” link in the first paragraph. You will then be on a page that is titled Connect to freenode IRC. Choose a nickname and enter it in the first window, then enter #diyode in the second window, copy the security script, and then click connect. This service is free to the user, and there is no need to download any software to begin.
If you are using Firefox, you can also connect using Chatzilla
Client Apps (Windows)
XChat is another IRC program. It is free for the first 30 days on Windows, then has a small fee for continued indefinite use. The XChat program is available at http://xchat.org/ . You may find it more reliable than freenode site above. Download the program, read the disclaimers, and if you agree, install the .exe file. Once you have the program, click on the XChat icon, and you will see a window entitled XChat: Network List. Here you can give yourself a nickname. You needn’t really give any more information to be able to log on. If it’s not already highlighted, choose “freenode” in the network list. Click “connect” at the bottom of the window. A new window will pop up on the page entitled XChat Connection Complete. Enter diyode directly after the hash symbol (no space), then click OK.
Client Apps (Mac)
Adium (http://adium.im/) is a great Mac client. It handles other Instant messenger platforms as well.
